Mumbai has a number of Khau gallies, so does Pune and other major cities of India. What exactly is a khaugalli? Well, khau means a person who loves to eat a lot and galli means a lane. So we get, Eater's Lane in English.
While passing the M.G Road, at Mount Carmel High School, Vasai (w), I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the Khau Galli board. Unlike other khau gallies I have been to, it is a fenced area having about ten stalls selling different types of food items. On enquiring, I got to know that it presently opens at 5.00 p.m. and shuts for the day at 11.00 p.m.
We visited this khau Galli in Vasai on one winter evening. As you enter the first thing to do is to get yourself a place to sit. It can get very crowded.
One has to get the coupons for the food you wish to eat. You have the menu cards to choose from. The stalls serve cuisines like Pure Vegetarian, Chinese, Punjabi, Kathiawadi, North Indian, South Indian, Burgers, Pizzas. It also has juice, cold drinks and ice cream stalls. They have a self-service system. Tables and chairs are placed where one can eat quite comfortably.
We ordered Chinese Shezwan noodles (Rs.120), sandwich (Rs.40) and the Roll strawberry ice cream (Rs.60). The prices of the food items were quite reasonable. The food was good. We loved eating in the open air space. Cleanliness is maintained and the hygiene norms are followed. Our experience was nice and we do plan to visit again.
The highlight of the entire place for us was the roll ice cream. It is made with real strawberry, strawberry squash & cream. Also, a lot of effort goes into making this one! It is made on an ice-pan & one by one ingredient are crushed & added. (check out the video)
Overall it is a great place to have pocket-friendly food. Much smaller than old Khaugalli but has a seating area.
