Mumbai Travel Guide | Essential Tips

Whenever you’re heading to a big city like Mumbai, Delhi or Kolkata you need some essential tips to make your journey that much smoother comfortable and efficient. Check out this useful checklist and get ready to take on the metropolis of Mumbai with all the glitz and glamour it has to offer.

Mumbai is a great choice. Not only for its films but also it offers a variety of sites seeing. Some of my tips will definitely make your visit that much easier. Believe me, you are in for a real treat. This useful list will help you immensely.

Now before we jump in, it’s important to know there’s no wrong way to travel. However you decide to get to Mumbai, the number of days you stay here, get around here, or immerse yourself socially, you’ll learn lots and carry back fond memories to cherish.


The first three essentials are your mode of travel, where you will put up and your daily outings. So without any further delay, here are the guidelines.




1. Your mode of transport to get to Mumbai

From the mainland of India to reach Mumbai you can use plane, train, or roadways. If you are coming from a place on the western coast, you have one more option and it is to travel by sea routes. If you are coming from a far off place, then traveling by plane or train is preferable. It's also important to think through the time of the year you choose to travel.


Note: Winter is the best time and the rainy season is the worst.



2. Travel essentials

Some of the travel essentials are earplugs and travel pillow, an eyeshade for sleep, face lotion and a jacket. Snacks for long journeys, music, and movies loaded on your laptop or smartphones. Carry high-quality wireless headphones. A book, magazine and a pen for marking. Carry medicine if are allergic to some substances.


If you’re traveling to Mumbai for the first time, you don't have to worry. The people are cooperative and helpful. Though Marathi is the state language, Hindi and English are widely spoken.



Comfortable shoes, hand sanitizer, going-out clothes, and a comfortable backpack.

Safety whistle or pepper spray is not required unless you are brave enough to travel at night. Mumbai police are efficient. A cross-body purse (as opposed to over-the-shoulder) to keep your items more secure across your body, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a headwear, money belt to keep your stuff safe. You need to be fit and fine to roam around this big city.




3. The Stay

Mumbai offers a variety of hotels to choose from. Depending on your budget you can lodge in a place ranging from rupees 1000 to 5000 and upwards. There are economical places dormitories also available in some places. Choose the hotel close to the local railway station.




4. Your local travel and touring

Local trains, Metro, BEST buses (cheapest mode of transport), kaali pili taxis and auto-rickshaws (in suburbs only) are quite reliable. Walking on the streets of Mumbai city is a part of the magic. Window shopping at Colaba causeway at Churchgate, Hill road & Linking in Bandra would be a good & profitable experience.




5. The food choices

Sampling all that famous street food like the Vada Pav, Misal and Usal. Also not forgetting the Bhel, Sev Puri and the Pani Puri. There are also a number of Chinese stalls, checking out all the restaurants ( Udipi and North Indian) is also a good option. Monuments heritage structures and museums, parks and sandy beaches, temples, and churches you have all here.
