Kitchen Clinic for common ailments

In these uncertain days of Lockdown due to Coronavirus, we are forced to live indoors. A slight cough, common cold, fever, or sore throat can create fears of being corona positive. Visiting a doctor in these difficult times is the last thing one can think of. But there is a solution. It is at your home, in fact in your kitchen cabinet and the refrigerator.

Most of us are ignorant about the number cures our kitchen has. Things that we use in our daily cooking can be used to heal, prevent illnesses, and boost our immunity. In fact, the kitchen is an extension of nature itself.

These home remedies are cost-effective and are free from toxins and chemicals.

Note: (It is important to keep in mind that serious conditions need the attention of a doctor.)

1. Sea salt for dry skin

We often notice rough patches on knees, elbows, and heels. Mix a cup of sea salt with half cup of coconut oil. Massage gently this mixture and leave it for a few minutes. Remember to keep this scrub away from your more sensitive areas like your face and the back of your arms. It can be harsh on the skin that doesn't require as much exfoliation.

2. Cucumbers for tired and puffy eyes

Keeping cold cucumber slices on your eyes may look strange, but this age-old beauty trick really reduces puffiness. The cooling sensation and cold temperature make blood vessels constrict and reduce inflammation. Leave them on the eyes for ten minutes for fresher-looking eyes.

3. Prunes (sukha alub-bhukhara) for constipation

Dried prunes are rich in insoluble fiber, which help fight constipation. These insoluble fibers really help. Prunes contain substances that act as natural laxatives that work on your digestive system. Begin with just one prune a day first and increase your intake to two if you don't see a response.

4 Sugar for hiccups (hichki)

When you get hiccup, the diaphragm undergoes a series of spasms, but you can stop this by putting a teaspoon of sugar underneath your tongue. The sweetness of sugar stimulates the vagus nerve. Keep sugar under your tongue till your hiccups stop and then swallow it to soothe the throat.

5. Ginger for menstrual cramps

The traditional medicine has relied on ginger for over 2,000 years. Ginger improves blood flow and reduces inflammation. Ginger is effective for relieving period pain. To make your time of the month a little more bearable, brew a cup of warm ginger tea and drink.

Besides these do consider the following:

Hot water and honey for a cough

Apple cider vinegar for spots

Vinegar for relief from bruises

Frozen vegetables for sprain

Turmeric for sore throats

Oats for eczema

Cucumber for bad breath
